Dog Park September 30, 1999 by Dan Lybarger Originally appeared in Pitch Weekly. ........................................................................................................Dog Park is the sort of romantic comedy that has no laughs and makes one appreciate the joy of solitude. Writer-director Bruce McCulloch weaves a pointless and tedious tale of 20 and 30-somethings who meet at a park to walk their dogs. A childrens TV host (Species star Natasha Henstridge) and a classified ad writer (Luke Wilson from Blue Streak) develop an attraction but waste their time with other partners. It takes no effort to figure out where the story is headed, and there arent any diversions (like cool dog tricks) to make the trip interesting. Without his partners from the old Kids in the Hall TV series, McCulloch cant come up with any interesting characters. Most of the folks in this movie are dull, self-absorbed yuppies. His eye for gags is weak as well. Unless you think lame quips about canine feces and the sounds of a dog trainer baying at mutts are amusing, Dog Park is definitely not for you.
